The first electrified RS enters a new era
With the new Audi RS 5, Audi Sport steps decisively into a new performance chapter. For the first time in the history of RS models, a high-performance plug-in hybrid powertrain sits at the heart of the range, blending electrification with unmistakable RS DNA. The result is a system output of 470 kW (639 PS), an optional top speed of 285 km/h, and the ability to travel more than 80 kilometres on electric power alone in urban driving. It is a car engineered not as a compromise between efficiency and speed, but as a synthesis of both. Offered as both Sedan and Avant, the RS 5 positions itself as the new pinnacle of the A5 model line-up. Under its sculpted bonnet lies a revised 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 delivering 375 kW (510 PS), paired for the first time in an RS model with a 130 kW electric motor integrated into a hybridised eight-speed transmission. Together, they produce a combined 639 PS, performance figures that firmly anchor the RS 5 in the upper echelon of its segment. Yet raw output is only part of the story. Audi Sport has engineered the RS 5 to deliver an unusually broad dynamic bandwidth. It can carve through mountain passes with precision, devour autobahn distances with composure, or glide silently through city streets in electric mode. The transition between these roles is seamless, reflecting Audi’s ambition to merge peak sportiness with everyday usability in a way that feels cohesive rather than contradictory.

A world-first Quattro system
If the hybrid powertrain represents a milestone, the new quattro system with Dynamic Torque Control defines the RS 5’s technical identity. Making its production debut here, the system introduces electro-mechanical torque vectoring at the rear axle, claimed as a world first in a production vehicle. This innovation transforms how the RS 5 deploys its substantial power. At the centre of the system is a completely new rear transaxle featuring an actuator, overdrive gears and a dedicated differential capable of distributing torque between the rear wheels almost fully variably. A control unit recalculates optimal torque allocation every five milliseconds, equivalent to a frequency of 200 Hz, ensuring immediate and precise responses to changing driving conditions. In simple terms, it acts as an invisible conductor, orchestrating grip, agility and stability in real time. The centre differential is preloaded to remain partially locked, managing longitudinal torque distribution between front and rear axles. Meanwhile, transverse torque distribution across the rear axle enhances cornering agility, reducing understeer and sharpening turn-in. The result is a driving experience that feels both exceptionally composed and dynamically alert. Supporting this drivetrain is a thoroughly revised chassis package. RS-specific front and rear axles, RS-tuned steering and large 20- or 21-inch wheels fitted with bespoke tyres ensure precise feedback. The RS sport suspension with innovative twin-valve shock absorbers allows the dampers to deliver both comfort and track-ready stiffness. Pitch and roll are noticeably reduced, while the system reacts rapidly to surface changes, preserving control even under aggressive load transitions.

Unmistakably RS: Design with purpose
Visually, the new RS 5 leaves no ambiguity about its performance credentials. The body sits approximately nine centimetres wider than the standard A5 at both front and rear, with flared wheel arches lending the car a muscular, planted stance. At the front, a three-dimensional Singleframe grille with honeycomb structure dominates, flanked by large air intakes and Air Curtains designed to optimise airflow. Darkened Matrix LED headlights with a checkered-flag digital daytime running light signature reinforce the car’s motorsport lineage, both by day and at night. At the rear, an aerodynamic diffuser and the matte oval tailpipes of the RS sport exhaust system provide a purposeful conclusion to the design narrative. Every element serves both an aesthetic and functional role. For customers seeking even sharper differentiation, the optional Audi Sport package intensifies the visual and dynamic character. Bespoke front and rear bumpers, two-tone diamond-cut 21-inch wheels in phantom black with matte accents and an uprated RS sport exhaust elevate the sense of exclusivity. The package also raises the top speed to 285 km/h and introduces distinctive interior finishes, including contrast stitching in Serpentine green and brass. Carbon camouflage elements and optional RS ceramic brakes with bronze-coloured calipers further underline the RS 5’s dual identity as performance machine and design statement. Inside, bold RS-specific details complement advanced digital functionality. The new Audi driving experience function, displayed on the 14.5-inch MMI touch screen, allows drivers to analyse routes, record sector times on track and even monitor drift angles when operating in RS torque rear mode. Technology becomes an extension of the driving experience, offering measurable insight into the car’s dynamic capabilities.

Performance without compromise
The hybrid architecture of the RS 5 is not merely about peak numbers; it represents a recalibration of what an RS model can be. With more than 80 kilometres of electric-only range in city conditions, it introduces genuine zero-emission commuting capability to a segment traditionally defined by fuel consumption and exhaust note. Yet when called upon, the combined 639 PS and sophisticated drivetrain deliver acceleration and high-speed stability that remain true to the RS ethos. Built in Neckarsulm, Germany, the RS 5 Sedan and Avant will open for European orders in the first quarter of 2026, with deliveries expected from summer. In Germany, pricing begins at €106,200 for the Sedan and €107,850 for the Avant, figures that reflect both the technological depth and performance ambition of this new generation. Ultimately, the new Audi RS 5 is not simply an electrified evolution of an established nameplate. It is a strategic redefinition of the RS formula itself. By combining hybrid efficiency, world-first torque vectoring technology and unmistakable RS character, Audi Sport signals the beginning of a new era, one in which electrification enhances, rather than dilutes, the essence of high performance.
